Colin's Story

The stories of our fellows overcoming the dark side of the spoon are something we love to share at MyLove. We encourage everyone to reach out and tell their story and perchance it will reach the right pair of eyes. Maybe it’s a pair of eyes that saw no way out and your story is just what they needed to take the right step forward. Perhaps it reaches someone who knows another struggling with a similar issues and finds hope. Whatever the case, we do not discriminate against anyones story, for they all carry their own unique power to influence.

We all have a story…it is up to you to get it out there and see what it can do, what it can inspire, and who it might save.

So, first up is one of our very first customers, Colin. He was gracious enough to share how he overcame the initial hump of addiction with the help of multiple dogs. He now continues to find solace in puppers to help with the chronic disease of addiction. Enjoy!

“To some people dogs are pets.  To drug addicts like me, dogs are a lifeline to connection and love.  My first memories of canine connection are with Doogle, a Bearded Collie who I fought anxiety and apartness with as a 4th grader.  Instead of spending time with the other kids in the lunch room I felt more comfortable to walk home and take care of Doogle who needed to be carried outside in his waning years.

Those 4th grade feelings of anxiety and isolation are still with me.  Often my most connected moments are when I’m alone with Lily, my girlfriend’s Cavapoo, who I know doesn’t judge, question or expect me to act like any specific version of myself.  Bella, my ex-girlfriend’s Pomeranian, looked at me the same way despite spending countless
hours watching me self destruct while in active addiction.  The difficulty of living through active addiction and navigating life in recovery has been lessened significantly thanks to the unconditional love I’ve received from Bella and Lily.  For them I am grateful today.”
